Keep your head up training drill

Hey you, yes you with the ball. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!

So many times we see, generally with younger players, for obvious reasons that they dribble with their head down. Now if it is still peewee soccer, its fine. Kids are developing and need to look at the ball as they dribble, however, you will notice that most of the time they end up dribbling in all sorts of directions, they run into other player and even run the ball out on some occasions, because they are unaware of their surroundings because they are keeping their heads down while dribbling. Again in peewee soccer this is always going to happen. But if you have older players who are still dribbling with their heads down, you need to get them out of that habit FAST!

This simple training drill will drastically improve a players ability to look up while dribbling, and they will basically learn to keep their head up to avoid running into the player next to them. Let's go through the drill.

STEP 1:

Line up several players at one end of the pitch on the line. Space the players at least three 3 apart, this will give players enough of their own space to dribble.

STEP 2: Players all start dribbling at the same time and all start in the same direction towards the opposite end of the pitch. They need to keep their heads up at all times.

DRILL PRO'S:

- Players learn to dribble looking ahead, instead of looking at the ball.

-Players are able to see what is happening around them.

-Vision on the field will also improve as the player gets used dribbling while looking ahead.
