I came across this drill while watching some clips on the FATV YouTube channel and I think it's a great drill to get your goal keeper a step ahead of the rest.
Two fundamental things separate the best keepers from the rest and those two things are agility and concentration. Have a look at the video and watch the body language of the keepers, you can see that they are constantly moving with the ball from start to finish. They don't save every shot, but they know where the ball is going all the time. This drill has also been used to make the strikers better finishers as well. Let's get into the drill.
STEP 1:
Setup a triangle of cones. Place a passer Cone A at the tip of the triangle. After that, place your striker next to one of the other cones(call that one cone B) and most importantly make sure your keeper is ready in goals.
STEP 2:
The passing player passes the ball in between cones B and C. As the ball is passed, the striker must run onto the ball and either hit the ball first time or take one touch to set the shot up and then shoot. Don't let the players take more than one touch before shooting.
STEP 3:
The striker will shoot the ball and it is up to the goalie to save the shot. The goalie must always stay centered on just in front of the goal line, he/she is NOT allowed to rush out at the striker. Make sure that the striker and the keeper are going at full pace to really test each other.
Drill PRO's:
-Creates better goalkeeping agility.
-Creates more focus and concentration in goalkeepers.
-Conditions the keeper's body for hard landings.
-Helps strikers become more clinical.
As I said, this drill is more for the keepers to become more agile, more concentrated and better diving specialists, but it can also be used to make your strikers more clinical as well.
Let me know what you think of this drill and if it helped you!
